Trump Plans to Extend TikTok Ban Pause Amid Ongoing Negotiations

President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to extend the pause on enforcing the TikTok ban once again, according to sources The Wall Street Journal reports. This decision follows a previous announcement made by Trump on April 4, which aimed to provide TikTok, its potential US buyers, and the Chinese government with additional time to reach a viable agreement. However, progress on the deal has been minimal since that time.

Current Status of the TikTok Ban

The current pause on enforcement is set to expire on June 19. Given the current state of negotiations between the United States and China, the likelihood of a deal being finalized before this deadline appears slim. Compounding the situation are the tariffs that the Trump administration has sought to impose on goods manufactured outside of the US, which began on April 2 and at one point included a 125 percent tariff on all products shipped from China.

Future Trade Negotiations

Both countries are expected to resume trade negotiations in the near future, as indicated by sources according to The New York Times. However, there has been no public indication that a sale of TikTok will be a significant topic of discussion during these talks. Various stakeholders, including the software company Oracle, are still interested in acquiring a stake in the US version of the app, given its existing relationship with TikTok as a cloud service provider.

Background on the TikTok Ban

The TikTok ban was initially announced on January 19. TikTok attempted to appeal the ban prior to its enforcement, but the Supreme Court ultimately decided to uphold it, leading to Trump’s decision first executive order to pause the ban on January 20, 2025.
