AirPods Buying Guide: Choosing the Best Model for You

AirPods Buying Guide

Whether you’re buying your first pair of AirPods or replacing a well-used older pair, it’s easy to understand why so many iPhone owners prefer Apple’s earbuds and headphones over other options. Apple has spent years gradually adding new features that work best — and sometimes only work at all — within the company’s ecosystem. These convenient features include audio sharing, automatic switching between Apple’s various devices, Apple TV integration, and more.

There are four AirPods models to choose from, each with a distinct appeal and advantages. You likely already know whether you’re more interested in earbuds or over-ear headphones, which is the first distinction. In the case of headphones, your only option is the AirPods Max. However, in the earbuds category, Apple offers three options: the AirPods Pro, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and the standard AirPods 4.

The Best AirPods Overall

If you want the earbuds that guarantee you’ll receive the latest and greatest software features from Apple, the second-generation AirPods Pro should be at the top of your list. They offer a full range of ecosystem exclusives. Additionally, if you tend to misplace items, you’ll appreciate that the earbuds’ case includes a U1 chip for precise location tracking. This allows you to find them easily using Apple’s Find My app.

The AirPods Pro deliver effective noise cancellation that significantly reduces ambient noise in all but the most chaotic environments. Their sound quality is superior compared to the standard AirPods, aided by the in-ear seal provided by their silicone ear tips.

In 2024, Apple introduced three major hearing health features, including a hearing test, automatic hearing protection, and the ability to use the AirPods Pro as clinical-grade hearing aids for individuals with mild or moderate hearing loss. No other AirPods (including the AirPods Max) offer this functionality, which distinctly sets the Pros apart. Their volume controls are also user-friendly; you can simply swipe on the stems to adjust the loudness of your music, a handy feature that the similar-looking AirPods 4 lack.

The Best If You Don’t Find Ear Tips Comfortable

However, not everyone finds ear tips comfortable. Despite Apple’s efforts to enhance comfort and reduce the feeling of pressure, some users prefer the standard, one-size-fits-most AirPods. Their open design ensures that you remain aware of your surroundings. While the AirPods Pro feature an impressive transparency mode, the AirPods 4 allow you to hear ambient sounds without needing to activate any mode.

Apple offers two versions of the AirPods 4. Regardless of which you choose, you’ll receive the same sound quality, microphone performance during voice calls, and IP54 water resistance (which also applies to the AirPods Pro). The more expensive version includes active noise cancellation and a more advanced charging case. You might be surprised by how effectively the noise cancellation works even with an unsealed design; it can diminish office noise and annoying background sounds, although louder noises and conversations may still be audible. The pricier AirPods 4 also feature wireless charging and Find My integration in their case.

If you are particularly interested in noise-canceling earbuds, consider investing a bit more in the AirPods Pro 2. They provide significantly better audio quality, stronger ANC, and an overall enhanced experience. I would only recommend the noise-canceling AirPods 4 if you are really opposed to using ear tips.

The Best for Those Who Prefer Headphones

I have fluctuated in my recommendations for Apple’s $549 AirPods Max over the years. They feature a standout design, but their premium aesthetics and feel come at the expense of weight. These headphones are considerably heavier than most competitors and can become uncomfortable during extended use. However, Apple has made thoughtful design choices: the fabric ear cups on the AirPods Max are much more comfortable in warm weather compared to the pleather found on Bose and Sony products, preventing your ears from becoming sweaty.

The AirPods Max provide impressive noise cancellation, and their transparency mode is clearer and more natural-sounding than any other headphones on the market. In terms of sound quality, Apple’s headphones have a pleasing sound signature that performs well across various genres. They offer an impressive soundstage for closed-back headphones.

Some features — such as conversation awareness and adaptive audio — are absent from the AirPods Max; this is due to their use of Apple’s older H1 chip. However, the company recently added lossless audio over USB-C, ensuring these headphones deliver the richest audio fidelity in the entire lineup.

How We Test AirPods

We dedicate dozens of hours to using AirPods products for our initial reviews, and this testing continues for weeks and months afterward. During this period, we evaluate sound quality, microphone performance, and overall reliability. Where applicable, we assess the active noise cancellation in various environments and have tested the hearing protection features of the AirPods Pro at concerts. We also closely examine the ecosystem benefits and how the AirPods integrate with Apple’s other products.
