AMD Launches Ryzen 9 9950X and 9900X CPUs with Zen 5 Architecture

Earlier this month, AMD launched the first two desktop CPUs utilizing their latest Zen 5 microarchitecture: the Ryzen 7 9700X and the Ryzen 5 9600X. As part of the new Ryzen 9000 family, these processors introduced the latest Zen 5 cores to the desktop market. Notably, AMD had previously launched Zen 5 through their mobile platform last month with the Ryzen AI 300 series, which has been reviewed extensively.

Today, AMD is unveiling the remaining two Ryzen 9000 SKUs that were first announced at Computex 2024, thereby completing the current Ryzen 9000 product stack. Both chips belong to the premium Ryzen 9 series, which features the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X, equipped with 16 Zen 5 cores and capable of boosting up to 5.7 GHz. Additionally, the Ryzen 9 9900X offers 12 Zen 5 cores with boost clock speeds reaching 5.6 GHz.

Although the launch of these processors took slightly longer than anticipated, following a delay from the initial launch date of July 31st, the full quartet of Ryzen 9000 X series processors, armed with the latest Zen 5 cores, is now available. All Ryzen 9000 series processors utilize the same AM5 socket as the previous Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4) series, allowing users to employ existing X670E and X670 motherboards with the new chips. However, as highlighted in our review of the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X, the X870E/X870 motherboards, which were intended to launch alongside the Ryzen 9000 series, are not expected to be available until sometime in September.

Having examined the performance of the entry-level Ryzen 5 9600X and the mid-range Ryzen 7 9700X against the competition, it is now time to evaluate how the flagship Ryzen 9 processors perform. The Ryzen 9 9950X (16C/32T) and the Ryzen 9 9900X (12C/24T) both feature a higher thermal design power (TDP) of 170 W and 120 W respectively, compared to the Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 models, which have a TDP of 65 W. This increase in TDP is accompanied by more cores and higher clock speeds at both base and turbo frequencies.

With these specifications in mind, we will delve into the performance of AMD’s Zen 5 flagship Ryzen 9 series for desktops, focusing on the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900 processors. Our review will provide insights into their capabilities and how they stack up against competitors in the market.
