Snapchat Launches App for Apple Watch

There’s finally a Snapchat app for watchOS, bringing the social media platform to Apple‘s line of wearables. This has been a long time coming, given that the first Apple Watch graced our wrists over a decade ago.

Features of the New App

The app allows users to preview incoming messages and reply using various methods, including a keyboard, scribbling with a finger, voice dictation, or sending an emoji. Previously, Apple Watch wearers could only preview Snapchat messages by enabling them on an iPhone, but now they can respond directly from their wrist.

Practical Uses

Snapchat states that the app will be particularly useful for activities such as alerting friends upon arriving at a restaurant or sending quick replies while on a run. A company representative noted that it is designed for individuals who want to “keep active conversations going while they’re on the go.” This feature enhances the usability of Snapchat for users who lead busy lifestyles.

Message Preview Limitations

It is important to note that previewing a message on an Apple Watch will not mark it as “read” on the mobile or web app. The watch app only displays the first 100 characters of a message, and users will not be able to view images or videos through the app. However, the company has indicated plans to “evolve the experience over time,” suggesting that future updates may expand functionality.

Competitive Landscape

Despite launching ten years after the first Apple Watch, Snapchat has managed to outpace many of its competitors in the wearable space. Notably, there is no dedicated Facebook app for the Apple Watch, nor has WhatsApp released an app for the device. Facebook Messenger did have an app at one point, but it was pulled.

Upcoming Announcements

Snapchat’s watchOS app launch comes just ahead of this year’s WWDC event. Rumors suggest that Apple is preparing for significant announcements during the event, including a complete redesign of its various operating systems and new Apple Intelligence features that are anticipated to be revealed everyone will just love.
