Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Unveils Stranger Than Heaven

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio first teased “Project Century” in 2024, and at Summer Game Fest, it debuted a new trailer revealing the game’s full name: Stranger Than Heaven. The game draws inspiration from the bareknuckle brawling of the Yakuza series, but this time it is set in the jazzy atmosphere of Japan in 1943.

Gameplay and Story Elements

While the trailer does not provide a comprehensive understanding of the story, it appears that Stranger Than Heaven will feature an open world filled with adversaries to confront and narrative choices influenced by the player’s actions, including whom they choose to fight or assist. Although the player character, Mako Taito, may not be a private investigator, he seems to be involved in a significant investigation.

Previous Releases and Context

Earlier this year, RGG released a spin-off titled Like a Dragon, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Prior to that, the last major entry in the melodramatic crime saga was Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth in 2024. Despite the gameplay similarities, it remains unclear whether Stranger Than Heaven is set in the same universe as RGG’s other open-world action RPGs. Nonetheless, the game certainly exudes a stylish aesthetic.

Current Development Status

Stranger Than Heaven is currently in development and does not yet have a confirmed release date.
