I recently attended a preview event for a game that has been available for almost three years.

According to my Nintendo Switch, I have logged around 400 hours in Pokémon Scarlet since its release in late 2022. It is safe to say that I am quite familiar with the game. However, when I received an invitation to preview Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on the Nintendo Switch 2 ahead of the new console’s launch, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to revisit these three-year-old titles that I already own. My goal was to discover how much they have improved.

I possess a high tolerance for jank in video games—it builds character—but I am also acutely aware of the performance issues that have plagued these titles. There are noticeable lag issues, the frame rate can be inconsistent, and online connectivity problems have been prevalent. For many players, these performance challenges have overshadowed what is otherwise a remarkable new generation of Pokémon games. However, with the release of the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the accompanying free performance update for Scarlet and Violet, there is hope that these issues may finally be addressed.
