Never’s End: A New Tactical RPG with Retro Aesthetics

A new tactical RPG is on the horizon, and it promises to be an exciting addition to the genre. Never’s End features a retro aesthetic that is likely to resonate with fans of classic titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics. The game boasts a talented development team, including character designer Masayoshi Nishimura, known for his work on Octopath Traveler, and a soundtrack composed by rapper and multi-instrumentalist Doseone, who previously created music for Enter the Gungeon.

Development Background

Indie developer Hypersect is leading the charge on this project. The studio is known for its previous title, the creative puzzler Inversus, which ended up becoming a sleeper hit. With Never’s End, Hypersect aims to create a game that goes beyond being a mere clone of Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics. Founder Ryan Juckett has indicated that the game draws inspiration from the freeform gameplay found in titles such as Divinity: Original Sin 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Gameplay Features

To achieve this goal, Never’s End will feature an open world and a variety of creative approaches for players to engage in turn-based battles. The battle grids can be modified through elemental magic, allowing players to manipulate the environment during combat. For instance, players can drain rivers for navigation or melt the ground to create lava. Additionally, enemies can be frozen or ignited, adding layers of strategic depth to encounters. Hypersect promises that “every battleground is unique, challenging you to find new ways to use magic and shift the odds in your favor.”

Customization and Community Building

Customization is set to play a significant role in Never’s End. Players will have the opportunity to upgrade towns, temples, and other locations to build businesses, establish trade routes, and recruit new companions. As the narrative unfolds, these locations will attract a growing community of weaponsmiths, tavern keepers, tanners, logging camps, and more. Furthermore, characters can collaborate to unleash “tactical synergies,” enhancing the cooperative gameplay experience.

Release Information

Never’s End is scheduled for release in late 2025. It will be available for PlayStation consoles and PC via Steam. While pricing details have yet to be announced, interested players can already wishlisted on Steam.
