iOS 26 Enhances CarPlay with Smart Display Zoom Feature

Apple has announced a new feature in iOS 26 that aims to improve the functionality of CarPlay by better accommodating the unique shapes of vehicle displays. This feature, known as Smart Display Zoom, allows for the resizing of on-screen elements to fit an additional row of app icons, thereby enhancing the overall user experience.

According to CarPlay engineer Olivia Hess, “Vehicle screens come in many shapes and sizes.” In a statement highlighted in a developer video report spotted by MacRumors, Hess explained that iOS 26 introduces the ability for drivers to adjust their display scale through Smart Display Zoom, which can be configured within the CarPlay settings. When this feature is activated, CarPlay apps will automatically resize to align with the new display scale.

While the adjustment may seem minor, it is expected to significantly enhance the usability of CarPlay, particularly for users with numerous applications. Currently, this feature is available only in a developer beta, but it is set to be included in a public beta next month, with a full release anticipated by September this year.

In addition to Smart Display Zoom, CarPlay will receive several other updates as part of the iOS 26 update. Notably, a more compact view for incoming calls will be introduced, ensuring that the display does not obstruct navigation directions. Furthermore, users can look forward to new features in Messages, including Tapbacks (emoji responses) and pinned conversations. Additionally, widgets and Live Activities will be integrated into the infotainment system, enhancing the overall functionality of CarPlay. These updates will also be available in CarPlay Ultra.
