Insta360, a company well-known for its innovative action cameras, is now entering the wireless microphone market with the launch of the Insta360 Mic Air. This new product is designed to compete with established brands such as DJI, Shure, and Rode. The Mic Air is compact, comparable in size to an Apple AirTag, making it one of the smallest and lightest wireless microphones available today. Despite its small size, it boasts an impressive battery life of up to 10 hours.

The Insta360 Mic Air is currently available for purchase through the company’s online store and various retailers, including Amazon. The microphone is priced at $49.99 when purchased alone, or as part of a bundle that includes a USB-C receiver for $69.99. The receiver is essential for connecting the microphone wirelessly to smartphones and other devices Insta360’s stabilized gimbals.

Weighing in at just 7.9 grams, the Mic Air is lighter than several competing models, including the 10-gram DJI Mic Mini, the 30-gram Rode Wireless GO II, and even Shure’s tiny 8.2 gram MoveMic. Its design allows for versatile usage; it can be clipped to clothing, attached using a magnetic backing, or worn from a pendant strap. For solo creators, the Mic Air features built-in button controls that enable users to activate noise canceling, start or stop video recording, and quickly mute the microphone. Additionally, the USB-C receiver is equipped with its own volume controls.

According to Insta360, the Mic Air can provide up to 10 hours of use on a single charge, with a wireless range of up to 300 meters. However, these specifications are based on ideal conditions, where the microphone is connected to its optional wireless receiver in an “open, unobstructed, and interference-free environment” and with noise canceling turned off. The Mic Air can also connect directly to the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 action camera and Insta360 X5 8K 360-degree cam via Bluetooth. However, this direct connection reduces battery life to approximately 7.5 hours and limits the range to between 30 and 50 meters.

While Bluetooth connectivity is a feature of the Mic Air, the optional USB-C wireless receiver is necessary for using the microphone with smartphones. This requirement may necessitate the use of an adapter dongle for older iPhone models that still utilize a lightning port, potentially complicating the user experience.

In conclusion, the Insta360 Mic Air presents a compelling option for content creators seeking a lightweight and versatile wireless microphone. With its competitive pricing, extended battery life, and multiple connectivity options, it aims to carve out a niche in a crowded market.
