Google Wallet Discontinues PayPal Support in the US

Google Wallet and PayPal

Google Wallet will soon no longer allow users to pay with their PayPal accounts in the United States. According to a report spotted on a help center page, Google has announced that it will cease support for this payment method and will automatically delete linked PayPal accounts on June 13, 2025.

As of April 11, 2025, the company has also stopped allowing users to link new PayPal accounts to Google Wallet. Users who previously relied on PayPal for quick payment connections will now need to manually add a credit card, debit card, or bank information to continue using the app.

Despite this change, Google will still accept PayPal-branded debit cards. In a FAQ, Google stated, “To deliver smart, flexible, and more rewarding ways to pay, PayPal constantly improves their offerings,” while directing users to an email sent by PayPal for further information.

The Verge reached out to PayPal for additional details but did not receive an immediate response.

For users who utilize a linked PayPal account for recurring payments, Google advises that they will need to update their payment method directly on the merchant’s website to maintain service continuity. Furthermore, Google Wallet will no longer display transaction history related to PayPal; users will need to access this information through PayPal’s website or app. It is important to note that Google Wallet’s PayPal integration will remain functional for users in Germany.

Google Wallet, initially launched as PayPal first rolled out support for Google Wallet in 2017, has undergone various updates and changes over the years. Meanwhile, its competitor, the PayPal app, continues to evolve with new features and functionalities, as highlighted in adding tap-to-pay on iPhones in Germany and rolling out a way for groups to pool money.
