Google is enhancing its search capabilities with the introduction of Search Live, a feature integrated into its AI Mode. This innovative tool allows users to engage in a back-and-forth voice conversation with Google’s AI chatbot directly from the search engine. Currently, this feature is being rolled out to Labs users in the United States, although it does not yet support camera-sharing. Google has indicated that this capability will be added in the coming months.

Search Live enables users to interact with a customized version of Google’s AI model, Gemini, allowing for real-time web searches. The feature is currently available in the Gemini app on both Android and iOS platforms. It enhances user experience by enabling them to point their camera at an object and verbally inquire about it.

Google first announced the integration of Search Live into AI Mode, an AI-powered search feature, last month. This initiative is part of a broader transformation of Google’s search engine, which is also experimenting with new functionalities podcast-like Audio Overviews into your search results.

To try out Search Live in AI Mode, users can opt into the AI Mode experiment within Google Labs. After opting in, they can access the Google app on their Android or iOS device and tap the new “Live” icon. Users can then ask questions aloud, such as, “What are some tips for preventing a linen dress from wrinkling in a suitcase?” The AI chatbot will respond with audio feedback, allowing users to continue the conversation by asking follow-up questions, like “What should I do if it still wrinkles?” Additionally, Search Live will provide relevant links during the conversation.

Other AI companies have also been developing voice interaction modes for their AI models. For instance, OpenAI introduced a voice feature in ChatGPT last year, while Anthropic launched a similar capability in May. Apple is reportedly working on an “LLM Siri,” but its rollout has faced delays due to challenges in achieving the desired reliability Apple software SVP Craig Federighi.

Google emphasizes that Search Live operates seamlessly in the background, allowing users to maintain their conversation with the chatbot while navigating through other applications. Users can also tap the “transcript” button to view a text version of the AI’s responses and can reply by typing if they prefer. Furthermore, Google will save past Search Live conversations in the AI Mode history for future reference.

As Google continues to innovate and expand its AI capabilities, Search Live represents a significant step towards more interactive and user-friendly search experiences. This feature not only enhances the way users interact with information but also sets a new standard for AI-driven search functionalities.
