Google Photos Redesign: Enhanced AI Editing Tools

Two examples showing the Google Photos redesigned interface.

Google Photos is undergoing a significant overhaul, introducing a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features designed to simplify image editing for users of all skill levels. The redesigned Photos editor consolidates various AI editing tools into a single interface, making it easier for users to enhance their images without the need for advanced skills or professional software.

New AI Features and Tools

The update expands the availability of AI-powered features, including automatic framing and the text-to-image Reimagine tool, which were previously exclusive to Pixel devices. The new interface includes a feature located in the top left of the redesigned editor that suggests different compositions for cropping or widening images. This tool utilizes generative AI to intelligently fill in any blank spaces created during the editing process.

Additionally, the Reimagine feature allows users to add elements to their photos simply by describing them, enhancing the creative possibilities for image enhancement.

User Interface Improvements

The most noticeable change in the Google Photos update is the user interface (UI), which has replaced the previous double-tiered editor menu with a streamlined single row of three thumbnail buttons. These buttons include the existing Enhance and Dynamic editing options, along with a new AI Enhance feature. When users select AI Enhance, the tool generates three different edits that combine multiple AI effects, such as image sharpening and object removal, allowing users to choose their preferred outcome.

Targeted Edits and Suggestions

In addition to the new features, users can now draw over specific areas of an image to select an object for targeted edits. A pop-up tool menu appears, suggesting the best effects to apply, such as moving the selected object, blurring the background, or adjusting the lighting. This functionality aims to enhance the editing experience by making it easier and faster for users to find the right tools without navigating through multiple tabs and menus.

Global Rollout and Availability

Google has announced that the features mentioned above will be rolling out globally to Android devices next month, with iOS support expected to follow later this year. The Verge has reached out to Google for additional information regarding which specific Android devices will be supported, but a response has not yet been received.

New Sharing Options

Another feature that is beginning to roll out allows users to share albums from their library by generating a QR code. This innovative approach enables individuals to easily view or add photos to the album by scanning the code, eliminating the need for traditional sharing permissions. This feature is particularly useful for large groups, such as wedding guests or event attendees, facilitating a more convenient sharing experience.
