Epic Games Unveils AI-Powered NPCs for Fortnite Creators

Darth Vader in Fortnite

Epic Games is set to empower Fortnite creators with the ability to develop AI-powered non-playable characters (NPCs), similar to the recently launched AI Darth Vader. This innovative technology was showcased during the State of Unreal event held on Tuesday.

Creating Personalized AI NPCs

Utilizing the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), creators will have the capability to design characters with distinct personalities, enabling voice chat interactions. When this feature becomes available later this year, creators will be able to customize various aspects of their AI NPCs, including voice type, delivery style, and character traits.

Live Demonstration of AI Interaction

During a live demonstration at the event, two Epic staff members engaged in a conversation with an AI character named “Mr. Buttons.” The character’s primary objective was to persuade players to press a large red button located in the room. For instance, when one staff member inquired about the screens in the room that advised against pressing the button, the AI character encouraged the player to disregard the warnings and push the button instead.

AI Darth Vader and Voice Technology

In May, Epic introduced an AI Darth Vader NPC in Fortnite, which utilized an AI-generated version of James Earl Jones’ iconic voice. The implementation of this technology received approval from Jones’ estate. However, following its release, Epic Games had to issue a hotfix due to player feedback regarding the AI Darth Vader to swear.

Additional AI Features for Creators

The introduction of AI NPCs is not the only AI-related development for Fortnite creators. Epic is currently beta testing the Epic Developer Assistant, an AI chatbot designed to assist UEFN creators in writing code using the Verse programming language. This beta test is already live.

New Franchise Assets for UEFN Creators

Epic Games also announced that new franchise assets will soon be available for UEFN creators to utilize in their projects. Notably, Squid Game assets will be accessible starting June 27th on the same day as the premiere of the show’s third and final season, allowing creators to publish Squid Game experiences later this summer. Additionally, assets from Avatar: The Last Airbender, which previously appeared in Fortnite last year, will be available for creators to work with in 2026. Furthermore, Star Wars assets are expected to be released at a future date.

LEGO Experiences Coming Soon

On June 17th, creators will also gain the ability to construct LEGO experiences, allowing for more customizable gameplay options and creative possibilities.
