Borderlands 4 Pricing and Pre-Order Details

Borderlands 4, the latest entry in Gearbox Software’s popular looter shooter franchise, is available for pre-order at a price of $70, which is $10 less than many anticipated. The pricing of the game first came into question when its available to pre-order now was announced without any pre-order details. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford indicated that the decision regarding the game’s price was not entirely within his control.

Pitchford faced criticism in a thread on X when he shared a behind-the-scenes video about the development of Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2. In response to a fan’s request to avoid an $80 price tag, Pitchford replied, “A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.” This comment sparked further discussion among fans regarding the rising costs of video games.

A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.

Many found Pitchford’s remarks to be somewhat dismissive, especially in light of the recent trend of $80 games following the release of Mario Kart World. While Pitchford did not explicitly confirm a higher price for Borderlands 4, he noted at a PAX East panel later in May that the game has a development budget that is more than double that of Borderlands 3.

The official pre-order information clarifies the situation: Borderlands 4 will not follow the pricing model of other recent titles. The Standard Edition is priced at $70 and includes free Vault Hunter, weapon, and drone skins for those who pre-order. For players interested in additional content, the $100 Deluxe Edition offers more skins and a “Bounty Pack Bundle,” which features exclusive areas and weapons. The $130 Super Deluxe Edition includes all of the aforementioned items, plus the “Vault Hunter Pack,” which contains the game’s two story DLC packs and new playable characters. While a $70 game is not the same as a $60 game, it is a more favorable option compared to an $80 price point.

Gearbox has announced plans to showcase more of Borderlands 4‘s story and gameplay during the Borderlands Fan Fest on June 21. The game is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 12. Additionally, a release for the Switch 2 is scheduled for 2025, with more information to be shared at a later date.
