Spotify Introduces New Features for Android Auto

Spotify Jam

Android Auto is set to receive significant updates beyond just Google’s Gemini assistant following the recent Google I/O developer conference. Among the enhancements, Google has unveiled a series of changes to the infotainment operating system, including an updated Spotify app, a new light mode, and the introduction of web browsers and video applications.

Spotify’s Overhaul

Google announced last week that the Spotify app for Android Auto is undergoing a major redesign, featuring new media app templates that developers can utilize. One of the standout features being introduced is Spotify Jam, which allows users to share control of an audio source from their individual devices.

For vehicles equipped with Android Auto, this means that any passenger with Spotify can join in by tapping a new “Jam” icon on the car’s touchscreen. They can then scan a QR code to start adding songs to the shared playlist. Unlike Apple Music’s SharePlay feature, which requires all participants to have Apple devices, Spotify Jam promotes inclusivity by allowing users on different platforms to collaborate. Spotify Jam is expected to be available in the coming months, according to the company.

Additional Features and Updates

In a recent video presentation, Google also highlighted the upcoming support for Quick Share in vehicles equipped with Google built-in. This feature will enable users to add stops to their ongoing Google Maps routes seamlessly. Furthermore, Google plans to introduce passkey support for its infotainment operating system, enhancing security and user experience.

Light Mode and User Interface Enhancements

Through a Google Figma kit designed for prototyping Android Auto app user interfaces, a new light mode theme has been revealed. While Google did not explicitly confirm the rollout of a light mode in its blog post announcement regarding the changes to Android Auto, it has been suggested that this UI option has been 9to5Google notes in development for some time in the works for years.

Browser and Video Apps Coming Soon

One of the notable mentions from Google is the upcoming support for browser and video applications on Android Auto. These app categories are expected to be available “soon,” with gaming apps already in beta testing. It is important to note that these features will only function while the vehicle is parked. Currently, the browser feature is available in beta for cars with Google built-in, while video apps are already available in that version of the infotainment system. Additionally, Google has announced that support for weather applications is now officially out of beta.
