The Social Network is finally getting a sequel courtesy of Sony.

Reports indicate that Sony is moving forward with The Social Network Part II, a follow-up to David Fincher’s 2010 film about the evolution of TheFacebook into one of the most influential websites in internet history, ultimately making Mark Zuckerberg a billionaire. Although Fincher is not attached to the new movie, Aaron Sorkin — who wrote the original film — is returning to write and direct Part II. Currently, there are no production timelines or casting announcements, but Sorkin will produce the project alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser.

While much of The Social Network was based on Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Part II will draw inspiration from The Facebook Files, The Wall Street Journal‘s article series that examined the various societal harms caused by Facebook over the years. Last year, Sorkin hinted that he had been contemplating a sequel to The Social Network that might delve into how Facebook contributed to the anger that culminated in the attempted coup on January 6th, 2021.

This idea appears to have evolved into a full-fledged project that Sony is eager to produce. Given how much more of a juggernaut the controversies surrounding Facebook in recent years, Sorkin’s decision to expand the narrative scope with Part II seems to be a prudent move.
